we handed over 120 mosquito nets to Kayts flood affected area people

Today, we handed over 120 mosquito nets to Kayts flood affected area people. Our heartfelt thanks to the Thirumamani family for their generous sponsorship.

At the Rotary Club of Chunnakam Heritage (Rotary District 3220, Sri Lanka & Maldives), protecting public health, preventing vector-borne diseases, and responding proactively to community vulnerabilities are foundational to our humanitarian mission. In the aftermath of seasonal heavy rains and localized flooding, stagnant water bodies rapidly proliferate, creating severe mosquito-breeding hazards that place families, young children, and the elderly at acute risk of preventable illnesses.
Today, in a targeted disaster-relief and public health initiative, our club members mobilized to distribute 120 high-quality, durable mosquito nets directly to flood-affected families across the Kayts island area.

Safeguarding Family Health Against Post-Flood Disease Outbreaks

Following flood events, families living in low-lying and coastal island terrains face immense physical and environmental hurdles. Standing waters provide fertile grounds for mosquitoes, drastically raising the incidence of dengue, malaria, and other viral fevers:
  • Direct Vector-Borne Disease Prevention: High-grade mosquito nets provide an impenetrable physical barrier, ensuring safe, bite-free sleep for infants, pregnant mothers, and elderly community members.
  • Support for Damp and Compromised Shelters: In flood-impacted homes where windows, doors, or mesh screens have been damaged by water and winds, mosquito bed nets serve as the most effective and accessible line of defense.
  • Relieving Economic Burdens on Households: Procuring preventive health supplies during post-flood recovery places extra financial strain on daily wage earners; providing free nets allows families to conserve funds for essential food and home repairs.
  • Peaceful Sleep and Mental Well-being: Eliminating nighttime mosquito harassment directly improves sleep quality and daily rest, helping families stay healthy and resilient as they rebuild their daily routines.
The profound relief, warm reception, and sincere gratitude expressed by the 120 beneficiary families across Kayts highlighted the critical necessity of practical, post-flood health interventions.
