Creating Environmental Awareness

Environmental awareness session held at Pallawarayankaddu Scool with the support of Poonagary MOH and PHI officers. Thank you Rotary Club of Chennai Sea view for your generous sponsorship.

At the Rotary Club of Chunnakam Heritage (Rotary District 3220, Sri Lanka & Maldives), protecting the environment, promoting school sanitation, and fostering public health awareness stand as vital pillars of our service mission. Educating young students on eco-friendly habits and disease prevention creates an enduring foundation for healthier schools, cleaner villages, and environmentally resilient communities.
Recently, our club successfully organized an impactful Environmental Awareness Session at Pallawarayankaddu School, conducted with the active technical support of the Poonakary Medical Officer of Health (MOH) and dedicated Public Health Inspector (PHI) officers.

Educating Youth for a Greener, Healthier Tomorrow

Classroom-based environmental and hygiene education equips students with practical knowledge to safeguard their local ecosystems and prevent communicable illnesses. The interactive workshop engaged students, teachers, and school staff across several critical focus areas:
  • Vector Control & Dengue Prevention: Health officers educated students on identifying and eliminating stagnant water pockets and potential mosquito-breeding grounds in school compounds and home gardens to combat seasonal fevers.
  • Responsible Waste Management: Students learned essential practices regarding waste segregation, minimizing single-use plastics, and adopting composting techniques to maintain clean, litter-free surroundings.
  • Safe Water, Sanitation, and Personal Hygiene (WASH): The session emphasized proper handwashing protocols, clean drinking water habits, and food safety standards to prevent waterborne and gastrointestinal illnesses.
  • Tree Planting & Biodiversity Conservation: Facilitators inspired students to take personal stewardship of local flora, encouraging tree planting around the school premises to combat soil erosion and provide cooling shade.
The enthusiastic participation, thoughtful questions, and dynamic engagement shown by the students of Pallawarayankaddu School highlighted the importance of bringing vital environmental and health topics directly into rural classrooms.
