68 Books, One Purpose

Today, we distributed 168 books to children affected by the floods at Chavakacheri Roman Catholic School. Our heartfelt thanks to the St. John’s College 11 batch for their generous sponsorship and support.

At the Rotary Club of Chunnakam Heritage (Rotary District 3220, Sri Lanka & Maldives), safeguarding basic education, supporting young learners, and responding swiftly to educational crises in the wake of natural disasters remain core priorities of our service mission. When seasonal downpours and unexpected floods inundate residential areas, children often bear an invisible yet severe loss: rising floodwaters ruin textbooks, exercise books, and study materials, threatening to stall their educational progress and routine.
Today, through a targeted post-disaster educational relief initiative, our club members mobilized to distribute 168 essential books directly to students affected by recent localized flooding at Chavakacheri Roman Catholic School.

Restoring Classroom Confidence and Educational Continuity

In the aftermath of localized inundation, families must focus their immediate, limited financial resources on urgent domestic repairs, food, and basic necessities, leaving little room to replace water-damaged stationery. Delivering study books directly to students within their school setting delivers immediate, meaningful benefits:
  • Uninterrupted Learning Journeys: Replacing ruined study materials ensures that children can immediately return to reading, writing, and completing daily classwork without falling behind in their syllabus.
  • Alleviating Household Financial Stress: Many parents in the Chavakacheri area rely on daily wage labor that has been interrupted by heavy rains; providing free books lifts a direct economic burden off vulnerable households.
  • Restoring Joy and Motivation: Handing brand-new, clean books to students brings a much-needed sense of normalcy, pride, and enthusiasm back to young minds coping with disrupted home environments.
  • Empowering Teaching Staff: Supplying students with required learning materials supports the educators at Chavakacheri Roman Catholic School, enabling them to resume structured, effective classroom instruction without resource gaps.
The radiant smiles, bright laughter, and deep sense of relief seen across the school grounds as children received their new books served as an inspiring reminder of how simple, focused interventions can protect a child’s future.

Sincere Appreciation to the St. John’s College 11 Batch

We extend our warmest, most heartfelt gratitude to the St. John’s College 11 batch for their generous sponsorship and proactive support in making this book distribution possible.
Their collective philanthropy, shared vision, and rapid response to flood-affected communities provided the critical resources needed to equip these 168 students with fresh learning tools. Collaborative gestures like this showcase the best of alumni solidarity and reflect the true essence of Rotary’s timeless motto: Service Above Self.
We also express our sincere appreciation to the principal, teachers, administrative staff, and School Development Society of Chavakacheri Roman Catholic School for their warm hospitality and seamless cooperation throughout the handover ceremony.
