Planting Trees for a Greener Future

Today we did the tree plantation project at KKS with the support of Valikamam north pradeshiya sabha which is sponsored by Green Layer Organization.

At the Rotary Club of Chunnakam Heritage (Rotary District 3220, Sri Lanka & Maldives), protecting the environment, mitigating climate impact, and expanding green cover across the Jaffna peninsula are vital pillars of our service mission. Preserving local ecosystems requires proactive collaboration, long-term environmental vision, and community-driven reforestation efforts.
Today, our club family successfully organized and executed a comprehensive Tree Plantation Project in the coastal region of Kankesanthurai (KKS), carried out in collaboration with the Valikamam North Pradeshiya Sabha and generously sponsored by the Green Layer Organization.

Expanding Green Cover and Restoring Coastal Ecology

Coastal zones and surrounding semi-arid landscapes are particularly vulnerable to soil degradation, rising temperatures, and unpredictable weather patterns. Planting sturdy, native saplings along the KKS coastline and community corridors brings meaningful ecological benefits:
  • Combating Soil Erosion & Coastal Protection: Native trees help stabilize soil structures, protect fragile coastal belts from wind erosion, and support local groundwater retention.
  • Enhancing Biodiversity & Local Climate: The newly planted saplings contribute to carbon sequestration, lower ambient heat levels, and create sustainable habitats for local wildlife and bird species.
  • Fostering Community Responsibility: Involving local youth, community members, and civic authorities in planting and nurturing saplings cultivates long-term civic stewardship for environmental conservation.
  • Creating Shaded Green Public Spaces: Over time, these trees will provide cool, shaded avenues for residents, travelers, and schoolchildren navigating the KKS area.
Members of our club, local government officials, and community volunteers joined hands enthusiastically with shovels and saplings, planting the seeds for a cleaner, greener tomorrow.
