Recycling for a Greener Future

Today, we installed a large steel bin at the Kokuvil Hindu College to collect hard plastic and aluminium for recycling, helping to protect the environment.

At the Rotary Club of Chunnakam Heritage (Rotary District 3220, Sri Lanka & Maldives), protecting the environment is one of our primary avenues of service. Sustainable waste management, practical resource conservation, and educating future generations on eco-friendly habits are essential steps toward building clean, resilient communities.
Today, we took an important step forward in our environmental preservation mission by successfully installing a heavy-duty, large steel recycling collection bin on the premises of the historic Kokuvil Hindu College.

Driving Sustainable Waste Management and Student Action

Improper disposal of non-biodegradable waste presents a serious challenge to local ecosystems, soil quality, and public health. Establishing dedicated, high-capacity infrastructure directly in educational institutions turns daily waste handling into an active learning experience for youth:
  • Targeted Recycling Streams: The newly installed bin is specifically designed to segregate and collect hard plastic containers and aluminium waste, diverting high-impact recyclables from open dumping grounds and landfills.
  • Fostering Eco-Conscious Habits: Placing a dedicated collection point within school grounds encourages hundreds of students and staff to adopt responsible waste disposal habits, instilling environmental stewardship at a young age.
  • Creating a Circular Mindset: Collected plastics and metals will be channeled into organized recycling streams, reducing municipal waste and promoting sustainable material reuse across the Jaffna peninsula.
  • Cleaner, Healthier Campus: A centralized collection system helps maintain a cleaner school environment, reducing litter and minimizing health hazards associated with stagnant waste accumulation.
Engaging students directly in green initiatives transforms them into active ambassadors for sustainability within their own homes and neighborhoods.
